Valiyankuttai and Pidari Rathas: These three rathas – Pidari consisting of two rathas and another called Valiyankuttai one, are located away from the hillock in isolation. These are monolithic temple with just the superstructure is carved fully. These were much later efforts, and when they were attempted is very difficult to ascertain. The interesting factor is the topmost member is square.
Mukunda Nayanar temple: As you approach Mamallapuram from Chennai, this temple appears suddenly as if inviting you to the fantastic relics located within the town. This is a structural temple. It is very simple. It was built during Rajasimha’s period. IT is very simple and built of reddish sandstone, again not a local stone. The sanctum has the Somaskanda panel and a linga of slightly later times. There are sculptures at the topmost members in cardinal direction, Uma Mahesvara ie Siva with Parvati on east, Dakshinamurthi on south, Yoga-Narasimha on west and Brahma on north. |
